Venetia, the region between the Alps and the Adria, is an old cultural landscape, dominated and moulded by its namesake, the city of Venice. Once the greatest and most powerful commercial city on the Mediterranean, Venice was supplied by its hinterland. Padua, Verona, Vicenza are cities whose art treasures attract millions of tourists each year. Yet history and culture have left their traces not only in the large urban centres. In the land between the Dolomites and the Po Delta, off the beaten tourist tracks, history is still part of daily life. The film crew travels from Belluno to Chioggia. They celebrate the return of livestock from the summer pastures of the Dolomites, take part in the Rice Fair in Isola della Scala and observe the medieval-style horseback tournament in the fortified city of Monselice. Then they travel by boat through the Po Delta and, finally, join the fishermen who are collecting mussels in the Venetian Lagoon.

Venetien, das Land zwischen Alpen und Adria ist altes Kulturland, beherrscht und geprägt durch den Namensgeber Venedig. Die einst größte und mächtigste Handelsstadt am Mittelmeer wurde aus dem Hinterland versorgt. Padua, Verona, Vicenza sind Städte, die mit ihren Kunstschätzen jährlich Millionen von Touristen anziehen. Doch Geschichte und Kultur haben ihre Spuren nicht nur in den großen Zentren hinterlassen. Im Land zwischen Dolomiten und dem Podelta, abseits der ausgetretenen Tourismuspfade, ist Geschichte Teil des täglichen Lebens. Das Filmteam ist unterwegs von Belluno nach Chioggia, feiert den Almabtrieb in den Dolomiten, das Reisfest in Isola della Scala und begeleitet die Reiterspiele in der Festungsstadt Monselice. Mit dem Boot geht es durch das Podelta und mit Fischern in der Lagune vor Venedig auf Muschelfang.
