For a long time it was uncertain whether wolves were living in the Susa valley in Piedmont. Then the first wolf was killed by a snowplough and, finally, on a high mountain pasture a first human encounter took place. Genetic traces showed that these are Italian wolves from Abruzzo. How did they get here? How could they have travelled unnoticed many hundreds of miles right across Italy to Piedmont? Above all, however, why did they choose this specific alpine region? The mountains of Piedmont are crossed by the borders of three countries - of Italy, France and Switzerland. Everywhere there wolves are to be found once again. What conflicts arise from this, and how, meanwhile, scientists from these countries are joining forces in an attempt to understand the alpine wolf are questions of European significance. For the alpine wolf is a particularly clever, particularly shy animal, and is thus a species yet to be researched. It is like a ghost, it appears and yet it is not seen. The filmmaker meets people who have encountered the wolf and shows breathtaking landscapes which are so pristine that the wolf is able to inhabit them. 

Lange war ungewiss, ob Wölfe im Susatal im Piemont leben. Dann wurde der erste Wolf von einem Schneepflug getötet und schließlich gab es auf einer Hochalm einen ersten menschlichen Kontakt. Genetische Spuren zeigten, dass es sich um italienische Wölfe aus den Abruzzen handelt. Wie sind sie hierher gekommen? Wie konnten sie unbemerkt viele 100 Kilometer quer durch Italien in den Piemont wandern? Vor allem aber, warum haben sie sich ausgerechnet diese Alpenregion ausgesucht? In den Bergen des Piemont verlaufen die Grenzen von drei Ländern: von Italien, von Frankreich und der Schweiz. Dort überall gibt es heute wieder Wölfe. Welche Konflikte sich daraus ergeben, wie andererseits Wissenschaftler aus diesen Ländern gemeinsam versuchen, den Alpenwolf verstehen zu lernen, das ist eine Geschichte von europäischem Rang. Denn der Alpenwolf ist eine besonders kluge, besonders scheue und deshalb noch unerforschte Art. Wie ein Gespenst ist er da, aber man sieht ihn nicht. Der Filmemacher trifft Menschen, die ihm begegnet sind und zeigt atemberaubende Naturlandschaften, die wieder so ursprünglich sind, dass der Wolf in ihnen leben kann.
