Italy - The Promised Land Of The Alps - How Jerusalem Came To Italy (134/151)

The Franciscan monk Bernardino Caimi was custodian of the Holy Sites in Arab-occupied Palestine until 1478 when he had to leave the Holy Land. During his voyage across the Mediterranean, he realised that with the loss of Jerusalem people in Europe had lost their most important devotional destination. While still on board of the ship, he vowed to search for a place whose landscape resembled that surrounding Jerusalem in order to reconstruct the Christians' Holy City there. He found this place in the North Italian Alps. For over three hundred years countless artists and craftsmen worked on the building of this "Jerusalem". They bequeathed to the Alps what is perhaps the most amazing complex of Christian Europe: the Sacri Monti - the Sacred Mountains. They had been completely forgotten until UNESCO discovered them in 2003 and declared them a World Heritage Site. While it is fascinating to explore the sites and houses of ancient Jerusalem in the Alps, another discovery is even more amazing:  thousands of lifesize terracotta statues portray the most dramatic stories from the New Testament, scene by scene, as if in a film.

Der Franziskaner Bernardino Caimi war Oberaufseher der heiligen Stätten im arabisch besetzten Palästina, bis er 1478 das Heilige Land verlassen musste. Auf seiner Fahrt über das Mittelmeer wurde ihm klar, dass mit dem Verlust von Jerusalem die Menschen in Europa ihr wichtigstes Reiseziel verloren hatten. Noch auf dem Schiff legte er das Gelübde ab, einen Ort zu suchen, dessen Landschaft der Umgebung von Jerusalem gleicht, um dort die Heilige Stadt der Christen nachzubauen. Er fand diesen Ort in den norditalienischen Alpen. Über drei Jahrhunderte haben unzählige Künstler und Handwerker an diesem "Jerusalem" gebaut. Sie haben in den Alpen den vielleicht erstaunlichsten Komplex des christlichen Europa hinterlassen: die Sacri Monti - die heiligen Berge. Sie waren vollkommen in Vergessenheit geraten, bis die UNESCO sie im Jahr 2003 entdeckte und zum Weltkulturerbe ernannte. Es ist faszinierend, in den Alpen die Plätze und Häuser des alten Jerusalem zu erkunden, aber eine andere Entdeckung ist noch erstaunlicher: Wie in einem Film erzählen in den Sacri Monti tausende lebensgroße Figuren aus Terrakotta Szene für Szene die dramatischsten Geschichten aus dem neuen Testament nach.
