Isle Of The White Donkey (25/268)

No one knows where they come from: The Albino Donkeys of Asinara. Some say the Marquis di Mores, Duke of Asinara, brought them over from Egypt in the 18th Century. Others speak of a cargo of white donkeys washed ashore after a shipwreck. Perhaps they owe their beautiful coats to an anomaly of the usual gray Sardinian donkey. In any case the Albino animals have become the symbol of the island off the northwest tip of Sardinia with its lively history. Two centuries ago the Italian kings turned it into their own personal Alcatraz, the local shepherds and fishermen were relocated to Sardinia - leaving behind livestock including the white donkey with the blue eyes. When the island prison was shut down by the Italian government ten years ago, the island was left to the donkeys, who occupied the vacant buildings - a big step up for their survival chances.
