Indian Ocean: Mayotte - French Islands with an African Heart (3/17)

The island group of Mayotte is part of the volcanic archipelago of the Comoros and lies in the Mozambique channel between Madagascar and the coast of northern Mozambique. The former French colony became the 101st department of France in March 2011.

Mayotte, formerly covered by vanilla plantations and fields of ylang-ylang, now lives predominantly from aid money from the mother country, on which the many illegal immigrants from the Comoros are also focussed. From 2011 onwards, all citizens will be entitled to French social welfare.
