In The Hell's Valley Of The Snow Monkeys (84/268)

Awesome mountain massifs, fascinating animals and an unspoiled wilderness. Such natural landscapes are rare in Japan. From December to March nature is frozen into an icy-cold stillness on the main island of Honshu. Only the hot springs make life bearable for people and animals - in fact, they even lure them to this place. Most species of monkeys live in warmer regions, many of them are to be found in the tropics and subtropics - snow is unknown to them. In Japan we find the exception to the rule. Japanese macaques have ventured here far into the north. Snow and ice are nothing unusual for them. In Jigokudani, the "Hell's Valley" of the Japanese Alps, 300 snow monkeys have found a safe refuge. The ravine with its hot springs has been declared a national park especially for the monkeys. But this mysterious place has another special attraction: people and monkeys both frolic here in the hot springs. This documentary describes the social life of the snow monkeys and how the people deal with them.
