"If a man is in need of rescue, an airplane can come in and throw flowers on him, but a direct lift aircraft could come in and save his life anywhere." This quotation comes from a pioneer of aviation, the Russian Igor Sikorsky. Since his youth he had been pursuing a dream: the construction of a helicopter In 1941 he succeeded in constructing the first precursor of a helicopter based on the principle still used today. Once Sikorsky had solved the problem with the torque of the tail rotor, he began to build ever bigger helicopters. The helicopter has exceptional aerodynamic qualities: it can take off and land vertically, fly forwards, backwards and sideways, drop and rise vertically, hover in the air while turning around its vertical axis. "Wenn ein Mensch in Not ist, kann ein Flugzeug Blumen abwerfen, aber ein Luftfahrzeug mit der Fähigkeit überall senkrecht zu starten und zu landen, kann ihn überall retten". Dieses Zitat stammt von einem Pionier der Luftfahrt, dem Russen Igor Sikorsky. Seit seiner Jugend verfolgte er einen Traum: die Konstruktion eines Hubschraubers. Ihm gelingt es 1941 den ersten Vorläufer eines Hubschraubers des noch heute gebräuchlichen Prinzips zu konstruieren. Nachdem Sikorsky das Problem mit dem Drehmoment des Heckrotors gelöst hat, beginnt er immer größere Hubschrauber zu bauen. Solch ein Hubschrauber besitzt außergewöhnliche Flugeigenschaften: Er kann aus dem Stand abheben und senkrecht landen, vorwärts, rückwärts und seitwärts fliegen, senkrecht steigen und sinken, in der Luft schweben und sich dabei um seine vertikale Achse drehen.
