On Iceland people are exposed to the forces of nature in all its extremes. Wind, storm, cold, sudden weather changes - these are the norm, domestic flights or short sea trips are always fraught with uncertainty. Nature is (all) powerful, it has a soul - as the locals believe. It moulds the character of the inhabitants - and they make use of its power.

Geothermal energy and water power are clean types of energy, typical of the island. In the power plant of Krafla in the north of the island we learn more about their quality and their risks. A whale observation tour shows that the Icelanders' dealings with nature have undergone a fundamental change and that their relationship with large marine mammals has become "more peaceful".

On the Westman Islands houses are being dug up which were buried by volcanic ash in 1973 - this region is also known as the "Pompeii of the North".

What influence do the forces of nature have on life of the people here? We seek answers to this question on our journey round the island, from Vatnajökull to the peninsula of Snaefellsnes, from Húsavik to Vestmannaeyjar.

Auf Island ist der Mensch den Naturgewalten in extremer Weise ausgesetzt. Wind, Sturm, Kälte, plötzliche Wetterwechsel - das alles ist normal, ein Inlandsflug oder eine kurze Seereise sind nie eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Die Natur ist (über-)mächtig, erscheint den Menschen beseelt. Sie prägt den Charakter der Menschen - und die Menschen nutzen ihre Kräfte.

Geothermische Energie und Wasserkraft sind saubere, für Island typische Energiearten. Im Kraftwerk von Krafla im Norden der Insel erfährt man mehr über die Qualität und die Risiken. Eine Walbeobachtungstour zeigt, dass sich der Umgang mit der Natur grundlegend verändert hat, auch das Verhältnis zu den großen Meeressäugern ist "friedlicher" geworden.

Auf den Westmänner-Inseln werden Häuser ausgegraben, die erst 1973 von Vulkanasche verschüttet wurden - das "Pompeij des Nordens" wird diese Gegend auch genannt.
