A green shimmering river, deep canyons and steep towering rock faces: the scenery around the river Verdon in the Haute Provence is one of the most impressive throughout whole Europe. Many adventurous stories - fairytales, sagas and legends - originated along the river's banks in the course of many centuries. A number of these stories tell about the Knight Templars as their treasure, the Holy Grail, is said to be buried in caves or beneath churches, chapels or the ruins of ancient castles. But what is the Holy Grail? A treasure of gold and jewels? A bowl containing the blood of Jesus Christ? A secret message about the Saviour's true life? The Templars' traces have long since vanished in the waters of the Gorges du Verdon or were carried away by the wind which whirls through the canyons. The legend of the Knight Templars, though, is still alive here and contributes to the area's magic in addition to the overwhelming landscape, the long history and the people who still continue to search for the Holy Grail.
