Habari Serengeti - Wild Cats (133/268)

The lioness keeps shaking her head and blinking her eyes. She can't keep her head still any more, she has distemper. Distemper in the Serengeti - where there are no dogs? The lioness was on a hunt with her group outside the park; there she came into contact with prey which the villagers' dogs had also been eating. This is how the lions of the Serengeti were infected. Almost 1,000 died. Other big cats, such as leopards and cheetahs, didn't catch the illness. Why? This is what Borner and the other researchers want to find out in order to prevent other animals from being infected. There is only one long-term solution to the problem: the dogs of the inhabitants outside the park have to be vaccinated, but that costs a lot of money and requires great powers of persuasion.
