Greece - Island-Hopping In The Ionian (78/151)

The Ionian Islands include Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Ithaca and Lefkas. Our filmic journey begins on Zakynthos, where the traces of the days the island belonged to Venice are still evident. A campanile rises high above the surrounding rooftops of downtown Zakynthos. To the south lies one of the few remaining breeding grounds of the "caretta caretta" sea turtle, which is endangered not the least by tourism. A sailboat takes us to neighboring Kefalonia, which was rocked by a major earthquake in 1953 and almost totally destroyed. Only the town of Fiscardo on the northern tip survived, and today welcomes visitors from around the world to its quaint restored fisherman's houses. To the north, Lefkas is the only Ionian Island connected to the mainland by a dam. Further out lie the islands of Meganisi, which has almost escaped tourism untouched, and Scorpio, formerly the private island of Aristoteles Onassis. The film shows off the breathtaking beauty of the Ionian Islands as well as letting their inhabitants speak their minds.
