Greece - From Mycenae to Epidauros - Visiting The Gods (81/151)

The myth of the Atrides family or the wonder of the Asclepius shrine of Epidauros with the most perfect theatre of the antique world: great themes in the history of European civilization. Yet only the initiated know the present-day name of the Greek region which is the home of these treasures. In the Argolis, the south-easternmost point of the Peleponnese peninsula, time seems to have come to a standstill. The proximity of the most ancient relics of civilization is appreciated by both locals and travellers with enjoyment rather than as an educational obligation. It is the loveliness of the landscape which is so enchanting that one can easily understand that, in the dim and distant past, even the gods themselves decided to gather here as if for a summit meeting. In the Gulf of Argolis - perched daringly on a prominent cliff - lies Nauplia. Experts claim that this is the most beautiful city in Greece. Its unique location at the "Gateway to the Argolis" may have inspired the Greeks in 1829 to choose Nauplia as the first capital of the Kingdom of Greece. This little port is now a popular holiday resort, above all for the Athenians, and an ideal starting point for excursions of discovery to the world-famous antique sites of Mycenae and Epidauros.
