Many people still believe that the Ruhr Valley region is defined by coal, football and beer. To this day, grim working-class cities, industrial plants and "curry-sausage" snack bars are the images so often connected with Germany's largest conurbation. But the Ruhr district has changed. The era of smokestacks and grey factories belongs to the past. Only a few plants of the once so powerful mining industry now remain in the former "coal pot".  Many cities are being transformed. And nature, too, is gradually reclaiming the fallow areas of former industrial works - the Ruhr Valley is becoming ever greener. In 2010, the Ruhr district  is the European Capital of Culture and offers an abundance of diverse cultural events.

Das Ruhrgebiet birgt bis heute den Mythos in vielen Köpfen, sich durch Kohle, Fußball und Bier zu definieren. Graue Arbeiterstädte, Industrieanlagen und Currywurstbuden sind die Bilder, die viele bis heute mit dem größten Ballungsraum Deutschlands verbinden. Aber das Ruhrgebiet hat sich verändert. Vorbei ist die Zeit rauchender Schlote und grauer Industrieanlagen. Nur noch wenige Betriebe der einst so mächtigen Montanindustrie gibt es im ehemaligen Kohlen-Pott. Viele Städte wandeln sich. Und auch die Natur holt sich Stück für Stück die Brachflächen der alten Industrieanlagen zurück. Das Ruhrgebiet wird immer grüner. 2010 ist das Ruhrgebiet Kulturhauptstadt Europas, mit einer Vielzahl an kulturellen Events.
