What has become of St. Tropez? The former fishing village was discovered by the impressionist painters and moulded unforgettably by the young Brigitte Bardot. Yet the true myth of St. Tropez lives beyond the  glitzy celebrity stages. Its wonderfully light esprit is personified, above all, by the old inhabitants, such as the owner of the artists' hotel "La Ponche" whose guests included Picasso, Romy Schneider, Francoise Sagan and, of course, the young Bardot. The manager of the legendary "Club 55" at the most beautiful beach of the Côte d'Azur clearly remembers how, in the 1950s, his mother cooked for Bardot's film crew in a little wooden shack. "Up to now nobody ever wanted to rename the town 'St. Bardot' ", he says. "The first person to really bring something to St, Tropez was Saint Tropez himself." Even today, some mothers still give their firstborn child the name Tropez. The St. Tropez of the locals presents itself in its full splendour on the day of the Bravades, when the inhabitants file through the narrow streets carrying a statue of their patron saint in a noisy, festive procession. The old St. Tropez lives on - while the St. Tropez of today perpetuates its mystique with an air of nonchalance and self-assurance.

Was ist aus St. Tropez geworden? Entdeckt wurde das ehemalige Fischerdorf von den impressionistischen Malern und unvergesslich geprägt durch die junge Brigitte Bardot. Der echte Mythos von St. Tropez lebt jenseits aller Promibühnen. Den wunderbar leichten Esprit verkörpern vor allem die Alteingesessenen, wie die Besitzerin des Künstlerhotels "La Ponche", wo auch schon Picasso, Romy Schneider oder Francoise Sagan und eben die junge Bardot zu Gast waren. Der Betreiber des legendären "Club 55" am schönsten Strand der Côte d'Azur erinnert sich gut, dass seine Mutter das ganze Filmteam um die Bardot in den 50ern noch in einer kleinen Holzhütte bekochte. "Bisher wollte noch niemand die Stadt in "St. Bardot" umbenennen", meint er, "der erste, der wirklich etwas nach St. Tropez brachte, das war der Heilige Tropez." Den Namen Tropez geben manche Mütter ihren Erstgeborenen noch heute. Eindrucksvoll präsentiert sich das St. Tropez der Einheimischen am Tag der Bravade, wenn die Tropezianer in einer lautstarken Festprozession mit ihrem Stadtheiligen Tropez durch die Gassen defilieren. Das alte St. Tropez lebt und das St. Tropez dieser Tage trägt diesen Mythos selbstbewusst und gelassen zugleich weiter.
