La Réunion is a French département off the East African coast in the Indian Ocean. The fascination of this tropical island lies in its beautiful sandy beaches and its volcanic landscape. 
Anyone who travels to La Réunion goes to France - the official language is French, the currency the euro - the island is a French overseas département. On arrival, however, travellers may well feel as if they are on Hawaii or in the Caribbean - Réunion is a tropical island of great fascination due to its overwhelming volcanic landscape and its fabulous sandy beaches. One of the most active volcanoes in the world - the Piton de la Fournaise - is to be found here. The entire island is a result of volcanic activity - numerous spectacular collapsed calderas, meanwhile overgrown and forested, and the over 3,000-metre extinct volcano Piton de la Neige bear witness to this. Réunion is a paradise of nature which should be explored on foot as far as possible since many fantastic regions are not accessible in any other way. One of the island's greatest problems is the increasing population. Most people live in places on the coast. Parts of the hinterland are already being built up. In order not to endanger the magnificent nature of the island, it has been placed - to some extent at least - under protection.

Wer nach La Réunion reist, fährt nach Frankreich - die offizielle Sprache ist französisch, die Währung Euro - die Insel ist ein französisches Übersee-Departement. Bei der Ankunft fühlt sich der Reisende allerdings eher wie auf Hawaii oder in der Karibik - Réunion ist eine tropische Insel und fasziniert durch eine überwältigende vulkanisch geprägte Landschaft und traumhafte Sandstrände. Einer der aktivsten Vulkane der Erde - der Piton de la Fournaise - befindet sich hier. Die ganze Insel ist aus vulkanischer Aktivität entstanden - zahlreiche spektakuläre, inzwischen grün überwucherte, Kraterkessel und der über 3000 Meter hohe erloschene Vulkan Piton de la Neige zeugen davon. Réunion ist ein Naturparadies, das man sich soweit wie möglich zu Fuß erschließen muss, denn viele großartige Regionen sind anders gar nicht erreichbar. Eines der großen Probleme der Insel ist die wachsende Bevölkerung. Die meisten Menschen leben in den Orten an der Küste. Zum Teil wird schon das Hinterland bebaut. Damit die großartige Natur der Insel nicht gefährdet wird, wurde sie nun - zumindest ein Stück weit - unter Schutz gestellt.
