As the wreckless lumberjack boss loses his employees salaries in poker, Nscho-Tschi and Wokadeh are trapped in a crumbled cave. Winnetou's and Old Shatterhand's only chance to save the two trapped behind massive mountain walls, is by using dynamite, but the railroad workers have run out of explosives. Furthermore an approaching thunderstorm is in danger of flooding the cave. Shatterhand, Sam and Winnetou make their way to Colonel Drews Fort hoping, that he might have some explosives at their disposal. The Colonel can offer them quite an amount of dynamite sticks, but they're so old that the nitro-glycerine is dripping from them. Being short on time they decide to take the risk of sudden explosion and using the fastest way transport the deadly cargo through the pass. During the transport Santer lies in wait for them. He can't pay his workers anymore and so he wants to clear of all the dynamite and keep it for himself. A painstaking cat and mouse game begins while the weather keeps getting worse and time is running out. Finally, during an encounter on a rotten old bridge Shatterhand, Sam and Winnetou overpower Santer. In the very last second they manage to arrive at the cave and save themselves as they lose control over the glycerine-leaking wagon. It crashes into the mountain wall and explodes creating an exit from the cave. Nscho-Tschi and Wokadeh are rescued.
