Dream Bird - In Search Of The Most Beautiful Humming Bird (114/268)

It all began with a drawing: in a hundred-year-old book there is a picture of a fantastic humming-bird. A legend among ornithologists - yet no expert alive today has ever seen it: loddigesia mirabilis - a species of hummingbird. With its unique tail plumage this bird really is in a class of its own. Two long bare quills each end with a single round feather, similar to that of a peacock. Loddigesia, aka marvellous spatulatails, live exclusively in a small and inaccessible region of the Andes in the north-east of Peru and have not been sighted for 40 years. Experts fear that it has meanwhile become extinct. In an adventurous search for the marvellous spatulatail the film team roamed through the misty forests in the foothills of the Andes. This is a wild, mysterious area, the habitat of many fascinating animals and plants - rare orchids, spectacled bears and the Andean cock of the rock. The team found numerous, hitherto virtually unknown hummingbirds of breathtaking beauty - but did they also find the marvellous spatulatail?
