Chief Inspector von Meuffels is sent to interrogate a particularly treacherous murderer in prison. But his day takes quite a turn when in the prison he meets Karen Wagner. So taken is he with the young department head, that he simply can't get her out of his mind. Von Meuffels may know all there is to know about murder and mayhem, but in matters of the heart he is quite reserved which means that what follows could only be described as a romance between two shy and fairly lonely people.

But the course of true love never runs smooth - although in most blossoming relationships the man doesn't have to deal with a curious series of suicides, the uneasy suspicion that his new girlfriend might know more about them than he would like, the arrival of an old meddlesome, if well-intentioned friend and a colleague with violence issues. If it hadn't been for all that then, who knows, maybe things wouldn't have ended quite as gruesomely as they did.
