Commuters Between The Zoo And Freedom (73/268)

Anyone looking at the Untersberg from Salzburg Zoo can see them circling: with their enormous wing span of up to 2.5 metres, griffon vultures are the largest birds of the Alpine region. Spurious myths were responsible for the extermination of the vultures in the Alps - for example, they were said to kill lambs, calves and even children. Sagas and rumours also surround the Untersberg with its birds. But the best story is reality: it tells the tale of how the griffon vulture not only found its way from the zoo's aviaries back to the summits of the Untersberg, but has also extended its airspace right down to Friuli in Italy and to the Croatian island of Cres.
