Flax cultivation provided a livelihood for the inhabitants of many regions of Europe up and into the twentieth century. One of the centres was and is Belgium. About 100,000 tons of the precious fibres are harvested each year - if the weather conditions are favourable. Not for nothing do the Belgians say, "Flax is made by the Good Lord." Too much or too little rain during the growing period can destroy the entire harvest. Apart from high-quality textile products, the capsules of the flax plant provide a highly nutritious oil that is currently experiencing a renaissance in the health service. Even the "waste", the linseed straw, finds a use in the upholstering and stuffing of furniture. Thus flax is one of the most ecologically valuable plants. The film shows the cultivation, harvesting and processing of flax fibres in Belgium. Historical footage breathes life into the past. Flax farmers, craftspeople, weavers and fashion designers talk about their passion for this inconspicuous plant and its incredibly diverse uses.

Selbst der "Abfall", das Leinenstroh, wird zum Polstern und Ausstopfen von Möbeln verwendet. So ist Flachs eine der ökologisch wertvollsten Pflanzen. Gezeigt wird Anbau, Ernte und Verarbeitung der Flachsfaser in Belgien. Historisches Filmmaterial macht die Vergangenheit lebendig. Flachsbauern, Handwerker, Weber und Modeschöpferinnen sprechen über ihre Leidenschaft für diese unscheinbare Pflanze und die unglaublich vielseitigen Möglichkeiten, die in ihr stecken.
