Being Good Parents (49/268)

Everybody has parents - animals just like human beings. And although there may, be to a large degree, agreement amongst human beings as to what characterizes good or bad parents, what is it like with animals? Are the parents bad or do they spoil their young with blind adoration? Whoever looks around in the animal kingdom will find parents who sacrifice their life for their young ones and others who never get to know them. We find females who give birth to thousands of offspring, others who give birth to none at all. When it comes to rearing the offspring there are no bounds to the imagination: the young are buried, incubated, suckled, spoiled and rejected, there are foster-mothers, and mothers who never lift a finger for their offspring. But there are also pregnant males who suffer contractions whilst giving birth. And with all this variety one thing is certain: in one way or another, all are good parents because they have ensured the continued existence of their species into our own times.
