The Salzkammergut is one of the most popular tourism regions in Austria, certainly due, not least, to the some 70 lakes that mould the landscape. The best-known of these is the Wolfgangsee with the eponymous place of pilgrimage St. Wolfgang. The region on the northern edge of the Alps boasts one of the most beautiful landscapes. Anyone wishing to enjoy the overwhelming panoramic views of the Wolfgangsee takes the cog railway up the Schafberg mountain or travels by cable car from the Mozart village of St. Gilgen up to the Zwölferhorn. In the past the route up to the mountain hut on the peak took half a day on foot, nowadays this highlight of a trip around the Wolfgangsee can be reached very quickly.

Das Salzkammergut ist eine der beliebtesten Tourismusregionen Österreichs, sicher auch Dank der rund 70 Seen, welche die Landschaft prägen. Der bekannteste von ihnen ist der Wolfgangsee mit dem gleichnamigen Wallfahrtsort St. Wolfgang. Die Region am Nordrand der Alpen zählt landschaftlich zu den schönsten. Wer die überwältigenden Panoramablicke auf den Wolfgangsee genießen will, fährt mit der Zahnradbahn auf den Schafberg oder nimmt vom Mozart-Dorf St. Gilgen aus die Seilbahn hinauf aufs Zwölferhorn. Der Weg zur Gipfelhütte kostete früher einen halben Tag Fußmarsch, heute ist dieser Höhepunkt einer Wolfgangsee-Rundreise schnell erreicht.
