Australia: Melbourne - Australia?s New Boomtown (2/17)

In 2011, a British business magazine elected Melbourne to be the most livable city in the world. Why? In the course of 200 years Melbourne has grown to a large city and office towers dominate the city's center.  The Melbournians are not fond of a hectic city life though. Their way of living is rather relaxed. When it comes to quality of living, the city has gathered quite some points during the past 20 years. In narrow dark alleys where in former days goods were delivered and trash cans stood there are now shops, pubs and clubs which guarantee a whole lot of entertainment. Many alleys have become real sites - due to some exceptional street art. And the weather is exceptional as well - in contrast to other, rather hot and dry Australian regions the climate here is almost like in Central Europe. This film shows locals in their daily lives - among them cooks, artists, street poets or a dancer who tries to teach the women the art of seduction. The men prefer to play Australian football or trugo - a type of sport which was invented by railroad workers. And then there's this unbelievable nature: directly adjacent to the city you can find impressing landscapes with clear coastal stretches, huge steep cliffs and vast rain forests with their fragrance of blue gum. Those who want to see animals like penguins, koala bears or kangaroos in the wild needs just a little luck to find them only about one or two driving hours away from Melbourne.
