Albania - A Country On The Move (32/151)

A new travel destination is waiting to be discovered - and it is on our doorstep. Although we hardly know it, we are full of prejudices: Albania, homeland of the Skipetars, Europe's last secret. It is a country that boasts a landscape of great diversity - with Alpine mountains in the north and a Mediterranean coast of over 300 kilometres in the west. The people are open-minded, warm-hearted and hospitable. They look back on a long history and are proud of the remnants of their ancient culture. Above all, however, they are concerned with the present. Since the end of the Communist era, presided over by the dictator Enver Hoxha, their life has changed radically. Albania is a country on the move that is striving for membership in the EU - everywhere this is in evidence, even though the road ahead is a long one.



Ein neues Reiseland ist zu entdecken - es liegt vor unserer Haustür. Obwohl wir es kaum kennen, sind wir voller Vorurteile: Albanien, Heimat der Skipetaren, Europas letztes Geheimnis. Es ist ein Land von großer landschaftlicher Vielfalt - mit alpinem Gebirge im Norden und einer über 300 Kilometer langen Mittelmeerküste im Westen. Die Menschen sind unvoreingenommen, herzlich und offen. Sie blicken auf eine lange Geschichte zurück und sind stolz auf die Zeugnisse ihrer alten Kultur. Vor allem aber beschäftigt sie die Gegenwart. Seit dem Ende der kommunistischen Ära, geprägt von dem Diktator Enver Hodscha, hat sich ihr Leben radikal verändert. Albanien ist ein Land im Aufbruch, das in die EU strebt - überall ist das zu spüren, auch wenn der Weg bis dahin noch weit ist.
