After the Long Night - Winter in Svalbard (33/34)

There is a very special side to the High Arctic. When the sun returns to light up the sky, if only for bare minutes initially, it looks both bizarre and graceful; when Svalbard is held in the icy grip of winter cold and storms, it is wild and irrepressible and when the last of the Northern Lights haunt the skies overhead, it is nothing short of wondrous.
But it is also at precisely this moment that everything begins anew: this is the time for those who wish to experience the end of the Polar night to set out with a dog sled into the white wilderness, or to pull on their snowshoes and conquer a mountain before sun up. This is the best time to explore ice caves under the glaciers or to watch Polar bears on the pack ice.
