Africa's Forgotten Monkeys (157/268)

The drills are the forgotten monkeys of Africa. Visitors to a zoo may have seen a mandrill, the better-known and more brightly-coloured cousin. Yet hardly anyone knows the drills, of which there are only 70 specimens in zoos throughout the world - even though they are among the most severely threatened primates of the black continent. The film team managed to shoot scenes which have never been filmed before. In the rainforest of the Afi Mountains of Nigeria the viewers are granted insight into the social life of a family of 20 drills. And a moment of unsurpassed tension is captured: Osamba, a splendid male drill, fights his adversary, almost killing him with his brutal bites. Will the group, in particular the females, accept the new ruler? Parallel to these events with their far-reaching consequences, the film also describes the struggle of the two protectors of the species, Liza Gadsby and Peter Jenkins.
