A Hippo's Dream Of Deep Water (169/268)

It is the height of the dry season in Zimbabwe. Many rivers have dried up, zebras, gazelles, monkeys and antelopes gather around the few remaining ponds. For the animals this is a nightmare: the last rainfall was eight months ago, the ground has become a desert, trees and bushes have withered. Only at the Zambesi, the largest river in southern Africa, is fresh greenery still to be found. Yet here, too, animals are suffering - animals from whom this was not to be expected: the hippopotamuses. For when the tributaries dry up, then here too, around the wide Zambesi river, their lebensraum will be diminished. Fights over territory are on the increase and, quite often, a defeated bull may have to wander off into the dry regions - to an uncertain fate.
