A Day Out With The Saimiris (120/268)

Spring is in the air - and the South-American saimiris in Munich's zoo have reason to rejoice. For here, at this time of the year, they are allowed to do what many visitors would think impossible, i.e. to roam freely, without any restrictions. Animals in zoos are usually enclosed; yet a few years ago Munich Zoo launched a thrilling experiment. These cute little monkeys, renowned for their superfical resemblance to a skull, were allowed to climb out of their enclosure on a rope ladder into the trees of the neighbouring giraffes' enclosure. Once there, no fence, no ditch, no pane of glass hinders their freedom of movement. They can set off on their travels throughout the entire zoo and even beyond its borders- and they do! Yet, in the evening, when the Zoo closes its gates, the saimiris return punctually to their enclosure.
