13 Hills For The Orang Utans (63/268)

13 Hills - Bukit Tiga Puluh- is the name of the Indonesian National Park, in which the battle for the survival of the rare Sumatran orang-utans is being fought most intensively. The ambitious aim is to once again establish apes on the 13 Hills. The animals that are given a chance are not even the strongest or the fittest from the other regions of Sumatra, but instead Daisy, Rimba, Wahkiki or Roberta; and already the names reveal the secret that these animals have all been living amongst human beings. Up until now almost 40 orang-utans in Bukit Tiga Puluh have got to know a world which ought to be their own - the wild. But for all of them this world is strange, for some of them even frightening. They have been carefully prepared by humans for their new life - until the big day comes, the day of their release into the wild. Some of them manage the step to freedom, others fail and have to return to care in captivity. Several animals have disappeared without trace - but this does not mean that they have died. Sani, a young female, also vanished without trace for eight months before returning with her newly-born offspring - the first orang-utan baby in Bukit Tiga Puluh to have been born in freedom.
