Mackline and Her Life in the Forest (14/24)

Little heroes share their biggest dreams with us and prove great courage in these unique stories from all over the world. The lives of our protagonists are as varied, interesting and diverse as their home countries.

Mackline and her family are at home in the rainforest region of Uganda, Africa. They belong to the Batwa population, an indigenous people who used to hunt in the jungle and live off the fruits of the forest. There is no school in Mackline's village. She and her brother Wilber are attending a far-away boarding school. During the holidays, they help their parents with the farming. They like to spend time in their village, participating in the rites and customs of their ancestors. There's always something to laugh about. Sometimes, they accompany the honey hunter when he searches for forest honey, made by wild bees. Other times, they visit the most secluded regions of the jungle with their uncle Kakuru, who works as a ranger in the national park. There, they get to see the extremely rare mountain gorillas from up close. Mackline dreams of becoming a doctor when she grows up, because there is no doctor to take care of the sick in her village.
