Costa Rica, a much lauded natural paradise between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific on the Central American land bridge, brings together a huge diversity of landscape forms, plants and animal species on rather a small area. A quarter of the country has been placed under protection and eco-tourism is booming.
We visit people who have made it their life's work to maintain this paradise or, where required, to restore that 'paradise' status. Overexploitation and monoculture - the main exports are fruits such as pineapples and bananas - have long since changed the face of the country.
That it does not have to be this way is shown by the projects presented in this documentary. In the film, locals show off the scenic highlights and particular features of their beautiful country with its volcanic ridges rising above cloud forests, rain forests that stretch to beaches from which you can look across to the off-shore islands rising from the sparkling sea.
