It looks like an outsized gobbler with lacquered black feathers and red cheeks. Plus there is its enormous beak which makes it even appear dangerous: the hornbeam. These birds live in groups of up to ten animals and roam a territory of more than 100 square kilometers. But the dominant pair of the group is the only pair that may breed. The film team accompanies the scientist Scott Ronaldson through the Kruger National park in order to watch these peculiar looking birds from close. Hornbills have their nests in empty tree holes, e.g. the baobab trees and in crevices. They raise only one fledgling, the other one is neglected. Scott Ronaldson is now trying to provide additional nests by offering the birds old drums in order to increase the breeding successes and accordingly the number of these birds. Last year the first hornbeams accepted a drum. The biologist intends to document for the first time the process of the breed and the rearing of the offspring by means of cameras which are installed in the nests themselves.
