The Concrete Needle, Fritz Leonhardt (64/108)

In the early fifties Süddeutsche Rundfunk decided to build a new television tower on the "Hoher Bopser", a hill in the surroundings of Stuttgart. The Stuttgart architect Fritz Leonhardt (1909-1999) designed a tower made of reinforced concrete, over 200 m in height and with a viewing platform. The tower was completed in only 20 months. The stability of the concrete needle is based on a simple principle: the tower itself is lighter than its substructure. It does sway when exposed to static influences, but when these decrease, then it straightens itself up again. Wind or even storm can do little damage to the Stuttgart Television Tower. Anfang der 50er Jahre beschließt der Süddeutsche Rundfunk, auf dem Hohen Bopser bei Stuttgart einen neuen Sendeturm zu errichten. Der Stuttgarter Architekt Fritz Leonhardt (1909 - 1999) entwirft einen über 200 m hohen Stahlbetonbau mit Aussichtsplattform. In nur 20 Monaten Bauzeit ist der Turm fertig. Die Standfestigkeit der Nadel aus Beton beruht auf einem simplen Prinzip: der Turm selbst ist leichter als sein Unterbau. Wie eine Kippfigur neigt er sich bei Krafteinwirkung zwar; lässt diese nach, richtet er sich aber von selbst wieder auf. Wind oder gar Sturm können dem Stuttgarter Sendeturm also nur wenig anhaben.
