Teotihuacan, City of the Gods (17/39)

As with many of the pre-Spanish civilizations of Central and South America there are more questions than answers surrounding the culture of Teotihuacán. From village communities, at around 200 BC, there developed an urban civilization in the highlands of Mexico. Over the centuries it produced huge, precisely constructed pyramids for cultic purposes. In the 8th century AD Teotihuacán suffered a catastrophic collapse.

At its zenith this now legendary ruined city extended over 20 square kilometres and was thus larger than Imperial Rome. Nobody knows what language its inhabitants spoke, or what people they belonged to. No writing has been found, nor has the name of any ruler.

Wie bei vielen der vorspanischen Hochkulturen Mittel- und Südamerikas gibt es zur Kultur von Teotihuacán mehr Fragen als Antworten. Aus dörflichen Gemeinschaften entwickelte sich etwa 200 vor Christus eine städtische Kultur im Hochland von Mexiko. Sie brachte im Laufe der Jahrhunderte riesige zu kultischen Zwecken präzise konstruierte Pyramidenanlagen hervor. Im 8. Jahrhundert nach Christus erlitt Teotihuacán einen katastrophalen Zusammenbruch.

Diese sagenhafte Ruinenstadt dehnte sich zu ihrer Blütezeit über 20 Quadratkilometer aus und war damit größer als das kaiserzeitliche Rom. Von ihren Bewohnern weiß man weder welcher Sprache sie sich bedienten, noch welchem Volk sie angehörten. Es hat sich weder eine Schrift überliefert, noch ein Herrschername.

Each episode breathes life into civilizations which thrived in the past ten thousand years, some of them then vanishing without a trace into the shadows of history. The films describe epochs whose legacy lingers in the perceptions and ideas of our own age, and cult sites which have managed to preserve their religious and cultural power up to the present day.
