Greece with its olive groves, Spain with its beaches or Italy with its fragrant herbs - most of us have already been on holiday to these countries.
Yet very few have noticed what is happening there. These holiday countries are threatening to turn into scorched landscapes, they are in the throes of desertification. This is not only due to climate change, which will only exacerbate the situation. Overgrazing, excessive water consumption due to a concentration of industry, agriculture and tourism in the coastal regions of Europe lead to problems whose consequences could extend far into the future. Researchers are even warning that our most popular holiday countries could be transformed into a landscape resembling the desert nation of Morocco with its desiccated river valleys. It is not yet too late - reorientation is necessary and possible. Researchers have known for a long time what has to be done.
