It is regarded as the queen of Gothic cathedrals, as a highlight of Gothic architecture. And it is an intensely French symbol - for almost a thousand years this was the place where the kings were crowned. Clodwig, the king of the Franconians, was said to have been baptised here in 498, and since then the Bishops of Reims have enjoyed special prestige. The ritual of the coronations since the Middle Ages is reminiscent of this historic event. The Maid of Orleans, who finally drove the English occupying forces out of France, also celebrated her victory here in Reims: she led the Dauphin, then to become Charles VII, to his coronation. After the First World War, when only the frame of the cathedral was still standing, the restoration of this national symbol was of great importance to the French.

Sie gilt als Königin der gotischen Kathedralen, als ein Höhepunkt gotischer Architektur. Und sie ist ein zutiefst französisches Symbol, war doch hier fast tausend Jahre lang der Ort an dem die Könige gekrönt wurden. Seit im Jahre 498 an dieser Stelle der Frankenkönig Chlodwig die Taufe empfangen haben soll, genossen die Bischöfe von Reims ein besonderes Prestige. Das Ritual der Königskrönungen seit dem frühen Mittelalter erinnerte an dieses geschichtsträchtige Ereignis. Auch die Jungfrau von Orleans, die die englischen Besatzer endlich aus Frankreich vertrieb, feierte ihren Triumph hier in Reims: Sie führte den späteren Karl VII. zur Krönung. Als nach dem 1. Weltkrieg nur noch das Gerippe der Kathedrale emporragte, war es ein Anliegen der Franzosen dieses nationale Symbol bald wiedererstehen zu lassen.
