It was a little bit like Neil Armstrong planting the Stars & Stripes on the moon - only this time it was a woman who had achieved the impossible: Oh Eun-Sun. In April 2010, South Korean TV broadcast her raising her flag on the peak of Annapurna, at 8091 m elevation (26,545 feet) live, making the 44-year-old the first woman to climb all fourteen 8000 m peaks in the world.
Oh Eun-Sun thus became the winner of a dramatic race to collect all the world's highest mountains. For years, Austrian climber Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner had led the pack, conquering summit after summit "by fair means", i.e. without artificial oxygen supply in the thin atmosphere. Kaltenbrunner looked poised to win a competition she herself always rejected. Then she was tied by Spanish mountaineer Edurne Pasaban, before the South Korean competitor Oh Eun-Sun appeared on the scene. The camera crew accompanied Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner atop K2, her "last" 8000 m summit, recounting the deadly and dangerous quest for the world record. Ultimately, she had to abort her efforts when her climbing partner Frederick Ericsson fell to his death in August 2010.
