Every year 60 million tourists visit Paris, lured by the fame and glory of this city - the Seine, the Louvre, Montmartre and the Eiffel Tower. They provide the setting for what is still our essential idea of urban life, for our vision of the multi-facetted, fascinating metropolis, an ideal breeding-ground for revolutionary ideas, crazy artists and the demimonde of louche living.
It was in the 19th century that Paris became a modern city with consumer pressures, Bohemian trendsetters in the arts and in lifestyle, loose morals and a scintillating atmosphere which proved a magnetic attraction for intellectuals. All hopes of progress in the western world were then concentrated on Paris; for contemporaries it was the "capital of the world" and for the liberal-minded it represented paradise on earth.
This series portrays landscapes, metropoles, sacred sites and monuments, all of which have made a unique contribution to the cultural heritage of mankind. Each episode breathes life into civilizations which thrived in the past ten thousand years, some of them then vanishing without a trace into the shadows of history. The films describe epochs whose legacy lingers in the perceptions and ideas of our own age, and cult sites which have managed to preserve their religious and cultural power up to the present day.
