Mail ships took much longer than trading ships to cross the Atlantic: in trying to find an explanation for this, Benjamin Franklin came across the Gulf Stream. He derived his findings from his observations of whalers. For a long time mysterious, subterranean forces had been held responsible; then Franklin, renowned above all, as a statesman, recognized the main principle of surface currents. The interplay of trade winds, pressure drops, temperature differences and other factors is responsible for the emergence of these currents. Thus it is possible that in the depths of the sea there slumbers a future source of energy: The first pilot projects off the coast of England are trying to use the power of the currents. The Gulf Stream also has a decisive influence on Europe's climate: If it ceased to exist, then winter temperatures would fall below the present average by five to six degrees and large parts of Scandinavia would be covered by ice. Weil Postschiffe deutlicher länger als Handelsschiffe für die Überquerung des Atlantiks brauchten, machte sich Benjamin Franklin auf die Suche nach den Ursachen und stieß dabei auf den Golfstrom. Seine Erkenntnis leitete er aus Beobachtungen von Walfängern ab. Nachdem lange Zeit geheimnisvolle unterirdische Kräfte verantwortlich gemacht worden waren, hatte Franklin, der vor allem als Staatsmann hervortrat, das Hauptprinzip der Oberflächenströmung erkannt. Das Zusammenspiel von Passatwinden, Druckgefällen, Temperaturunterschieden und weiteren Faktoren ist für die Entstehung dieser Strömungen verantwortlich. In den Tiefen der Meere schlummert damit möglicherweise eine Energiequelle von morgen: Erste Pilotprojekte vor der Küste Englands versuchen die Strömungskraft zu nutzen. Auch auf das Klima in Europa hat der Golfstrom enrtscheidenende Einfluss: versiegte er, würden die Wintertemperaturen um fünf bis sechs Grad unter den heutigen Durchschnitt fallen und weite Teile Skandinaviens lägen unter einer Eisdecke.
