The maleo, also known as Gray's brush-turkey, lays one single egg - but this egg is really enormous. It is buried in a way that is hitherto only familiar from the world of reptiles. On its head the maleo has a strange casque that resembles a helmet. Scientists assume that this helps the bird to cope with the scorching heat in its nesting places. For the hot sands of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi play a key role in the hatching process. It is in the vicinity of volcanic springs and on beaches reminiscent of furnaces that the maleo lays its egg, which is then incubated by the heat.
