The High Arctic is an extreme habitat - at any time of year. Snow and ice, storm and cold determine everything; they are responsible for conditions which at first glance seem completely incompatible with life. And yet, just a few lines of latitude to the south of the North Pole, there is fauna and flora which has adapted perfectly to precisely these harsh conditions. Svalbard, an archipelago that lies some 1,200 km south of the Pole is a perfect and largely untouched example of this.
