After his wife's murder, Inspector Maurice LaBréa leaves Marseilles with his 12-year-old daughter Jenny to find some peace in Paris. But with his first case, he is immediately plunged back into his memories of the gruesome killing by a spree of serial killings keeping Paris in fear after the hideous murders of two young women in the Bastille quarter.  


His only lead is the photocopy of a bloody footprint. Soon Inspector LaBréa and his colleagues, Claudine Millot and Jean-Marc Lagarde, are called to another crime scene, where a young woman again was brutally assaulted and sexually abused. Within days, more of the same terrible crimes occur, the only connection between the victims being the fact that they live around the Place de la Bastille. Soon LaBréa realizes the killer is imitating the "Beast of the Bastille", who went on a killing spree ten years ago and has been in prison for five. But the copycat killer seems even more cunning, his cover is apparently flawless. Then a slipup in the investigation draws the killer's attention to LaBréa and his daughter Jenny... 


Nach dem Mord an seiner Frau verlässt Maurice LaBréa mit seiner zwölfjährigen Tochter Jenny Marseille, um in Paris Abstand von der schrecklichen Tat zu gewinnen. Doch gleich sein erster Fall konfrontiert ihn mit den Erinnerungen an die Vergangenheit: Paris wird seit Wochen von einem Serienkiller in Atem gehalten, der zwei junge Frauen in der Gegend um die Bastille brutal ermordet hat.  


Die einzige Spur ist die Fotokopie eines blutigen Fußabdruckes. Kurz darauf werden Kommissar LaBréa und seine Kollegen Claudine Millot und Jean-Marc Lagarde an einen weiteren Tatort gerufen. Auch hier wurde wieder eine junge Frau brutal misshandelt und vergewaltigt. Nur wenige Tage später geschehen weitere Morde, die immer die gleiche Vorgehensweise aufweisen. Zwischen den Opfern scheint zunächst keine Verbindung zu bestehen, abgesehen davon, dass alle rund um die Place de la Bastille wohnten. Bald ahnt LaBreá, dass der Täter die "Bestie von der Bastille" imitiert - einen berüchtigten Serienmörder, der Ende der 1990er Jahre sein Unwesen trieb und seit fünf Jahren in Haft ist. Aber der Nachahmungstäter scheint noch gerissener zu sein, seine Tarnung ist perfekt. Zu allem Überfluss geht bei der Ermittlungsarbeit etwas schief und LaBréa und seine Tochter geraten ins Visier des Bösen ...
