This unique coastal landscape with its lakes, arrow-grass islands, bluff and alluvial coasts, necks, bays, dunes and lagoons is the most important resting-place for cranes in Germany. In autumn 50.000 of these large indigenous birds stay in the National Park. And for many other migrant birds this region is an ideal stopover on their journey to the south. The diversity of the landscape also attracts many species of birds to stay over the winter. Lapwings and avocets live on the bird islands, hundreds of sand-martins nest in the cliffs of Hiddensee. Two-thirds of the entire area of the National Park consist of water. A speciality in the small bays are the arrow-grass meadows with their numerous small animals. On a diving expedition this important habitat is also presented to the viewer. The film shows the flora and fauna of the National Park at all times of the year.
