Valleys with mountain streams, ridges and deep lakes are characteristic of this landscape in Germany's only Alpine National Park. Marmots romp and frolic in the numerous alpine pastures. In April, when the slopes are still covered by snow, they make their way into the open. They always live in large families. Their caves offer protection from the cold, from dangerous intruders and approaching enemies, such as the golden eagle. Very strict protection measures have stabilised the numbers of this raptor in his habitat. Like the marmots, the chamois already put on an extra layer of fat in summer. These long-legged creatures have some difficulty making their way through the snow. In spring, however, their climbing feats are once again breathtaking. They move gracefully over the rocks, with leaps of up to 15 meters.
