Dr. Klaus-Peter Reck, chief executive of a software company in Munich, attends a seminar lasting several days on personality development for managers in Chiemgau. He never returns from this course: his corpse is found in the lake, he has been shot in the head. Inspector Jürgen Tauber and Dr. Sylvia Jansen, the police psychologist, encounter a distinct lack of co-operation on the part of Max Ortheil who was in charge of the seminar. Wherever possible, he tries to boycott their investigations. What is he trying to hide? When the other members of the seminar find out that Reck has presumably been murdered, panic breaks out. Each one of them fears for his life and suspects one of the others of being the murderer. Finally they accuse Krista Vitzthum, the only woman in the course, of having killed Reck. Krista runs away, but not before leaving a clue for Tauber and Jansen in a secretly installed video room where illegal recordings of the seminar sessions are to be found. One of the videos reveals the surprising truth which led to Reck's death.
