In his 37th television programme, when Professor Grzimek let a fully-grown South American marine iguana run over his desk, he knew that people in Germany had never seen such a creature. Grzimek, director of Frankfurt Zoo, was the man who brought the animals of this world into German living-rooms with his TV series "A Place For Animals". With this Grzimek was able not only to fascinate people, he also mobilised them to support the preservation of the last paradises of this world. His work led to the establishment of a foundation, the Frankfurt Zoological Society, that has carried on his work to this day.The film team sets off on the trail of Grzimek's heirs, the researchers and adventurers who are fighting for the protection of threatened habitats and species in South America. From the volcanic Galapagos over the tropical rainforests down to the rough mountain world of Patagonia - no continent is as multifaceted and diverse as South America.
