Canadians call Newfoundland simply "The Rock". In the far eastern part of Canada the great crags rise along with the harsh weather and huge Atlantic waves to defy those who dare to inhabit them - Gros Morne National Park is here. It owes its name to a 806 meter high mountain which at first glance appears barren and isolated but in fact is the habitat for many animal species: Caribou graze on the slopes, ptarmigan and arctic hares live among the rocks. The film offers a glimpse into typical life on the island and observes people who protect the natural and cultural heritage of their homeland in order to sustain the raw and rugged paradise of Newfoundland.
