Once their initial reservations have been overcome, the villagers of Großraming really warm to their new local practitioner Dr. Johanna Lohmann. Even the stubborn Leo Bergmeier, owner of a large farm, who was at first deeply suspicious of this city woman in a white overall, is meanwhile convinced of Johanna's professional skills. Every day Johanna calls on Bergmeier's daughter Verena, who is soon to give birth to her first child. Bergmeier, who sets great store on tradition, is planning a grand wedding for his daughter - to the dismay of his future son-in-law. Nor is it by any means certain that the baby will wait long enough for the great event. Johanna herself is still uncertain about her feelings for the attractive vet Laurenz Hofer. He, however, is irritated by her hesitation, and so a mere difference of opinion escalates into a bitter quarrel. When one of the forest workers falls ill with clear symptoms of rabies, Johanna immediately sounds the alarm - and Laurenz accuses her of triggering an unnecessary panic in the village. The experienced vet doesn't believe in her rabies theory and feels sidelined by Johanna - until the clinic confirms her diagnosis. Then suddenly Johanna's little son Max falls seriously ill after having been bitten by a hedgehog...
