When Boy needs a pedicure, it's a major operation involving heavy-duty cranes and a team of experts from Kiev's partner city, Munich. After a deadly accident killed a caretaker a few years ago, the elephant's foot hygiene is a matter for experienced professionals only. Since Boy has a healthy, hearty appetite, his toenails grow quickly. His tough cuticles are treated by the team of experts in "protected exposure", that is, the bull elephant receives a complete anesthetic in a cage, where two of his feet can be trimmed. Then the bull, one of the largest living Indian elephants, is heaved onto his other side with the heavy-duty cranes, so the other two feet can be trimmed and pebbles removed from under the nails. An elaborate ritual intrinsically necessary to protect both the behemoth and his wardens from serious injury.
