He is the idol of ecologists, an ambassador of peace, the patron saint of Italy - and lived over 800 years ago. During his lifetime he was already regarded as a revolutionary, as an extremist, a nonconformist, a thorn in the flesh of the established powers. Francis of Assisi bestowed lasting fame upon the small, hitherto rather insignificant town of Assisi. Because of him the most important artists of the Middle Ages came to Assisi to embellish his mortuary chapel. He inspired the painters to develop completely new methods of depiction; it was his influence which, for the first time, turned the celebration of Christmas into a festival of emotions.

A man without possessions or influence, it was his stirring ideas alone which shook the complacent, powerful church. Over the centuries they have lost none of their relevance. And they have turned the Umbrian city of Assisi into a spiritual centre, a place of pilgrimage visited every year by millions of people.

Schon zu Lebzeiten galt er als Revolutionär, als Extremist, völlig unangepasst, der Obrigkeit ein Dorn im Auge. Franz von Assisi verschaffte dem kleinen, eher unbedeutenden Städtchen Assisi nachhaltigen Weltruhm. Wegen seiner Person kamen die bedeutendsten Künstler des Mittelalters nach Assisi, um seine Grabeskirche zu schmücken. Er inspirierte die Maler zu völlig neuen Darstellungsweisen, selbst das Weihnachtsfest wurde erst durch ihn ein Fest der Gefühle.

Nur durch seine zündenden Ideen, ohne Besitz oder Einfluß, erschütterte er die behäbige und machtvolle Kirche. Sie haben über die Jahrhunderte hinweg nichts von ihrer Aktualität verloren. Und sie haben die umbrische Stadt Assisi zu einem geistigen Zentrum werden lassen, zu einem Pilgerzentrum, das jährlich Millionen von Menschen aufsuchen.
